The Evolution of Hair Transplantation Techniques from Past to Present

Hair loss has been a common concern for centuries, leading to numerous innovations in hair restoration. The history of hair transplantation spans from ancient Egyptian and Greek methods to modern advanced robotic procedures. Early attempts involved various concoctions and surgical techniques. Significant progress was made in the 19th century by Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach, who conducted experiments on hair transplants in animals. In the 1930s, Japanese dermatologist Dr. Shoji Okuda developed techniques to treat scalp injuries with hair follicles, laying the groundwork for modern methods.

In the 1950s, American dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich introduced the concept of “donor dominance,” proving that transplanted hair retains the characteristics of the donor site. This breakthrough established the foundation for current hair transplantation techniques, including Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). While FUT involves removing a strip of scalp, FUE extracts individual follicles, offering less scarring and faster recovery.

Modern advancements include robotic hair transplantation and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. Robotic techniques enhance precision, yet experienced doctors’ skills remain unmatched. PRP, pioneered in Turkey by Dr. Sibel Ulusan, promotes healing and stimulates hair growth. The future of hair transplantation looks promising, driven by continuous innovation.
